Title: Joy versus Nonessential Rules
Scripture: Romans 14:17 says,
“The kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.”
Main Idea: One essential element of living under the rule of God the King and under the influence of his Holy Spirit is joy.
More: When we take God’s will seriously, it is possible to get sidetracked into focusing on things that rob us of joy. The context of this verse shows that this had happened to the Romans. They were judging each other over keeping Old Testament laws of food and drink. Their religion was bringing them more conflict than joy. Paul says the food laws don’t matter; what did matter was joy.
Faith and Worship Declarations: I serve God by maintaining joy in him.
