Title: What Shepherds Have to Do with Joy
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 1:24 says,
“Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith.”
Main Idea: The goal of true ministers and leaders of Christ’s church is not to dominate others, but rather to lead them into joy, the joy that only growing faith and obedience to the Lord can bring.
More: The relationship between Christians and their leaders usually has a bit of tension because no Christian is perfect and the leader’s responsibility under Christ is to teach people “to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:20). A wise Christian will cooperate with leaders, not resent them, because cooperation will lead to increased joy. Zealous discipleship leads to greater happiness. Therefore, listen to sermons with a teachable heart and humbly receive admonishment. Your shepherd’s goal is your joy.
Faith and Worship Declarations: Thank you, Lord, for giving the church and providing shepherds who lead me into the joy of Christlikeness. I receive and follow their leadership and as a result I am growing in happiness.
