Title: Must Sorrow Drive out Joy?
Scripture: In 2 Corinthians 6:10, the apostle Paul described himself
“as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing”
Main Idea: A believer can rejoice even while feeling sorrow.
For Hungry Readers: When times of sorrow come, we don’t have to wait to rejoice. If we are in Christ, joy and sorrow are not mutually exclusive. Sorrow need not snuff out joy, though our joy will be of a different sort than what we feel when all is well.
One difference is that worldly sorrow is accompanied by despair and a sense of permanent loss. But by faith the Christian’s sorrow is always felt in the context of hope, in the assurance that God is working for good, and in the comfort of God’s love. In these we rejoice without any sense of denial or contradiction.
Faith Declarations: Even in sorrow, I rejoice in the Lord, for sorrows are not the final word.
