Day 27 — Friday, March 31st
Title: Every Kind of Favor
Scripture: 3 John 1:2
ESV: “Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul.”
NAU: “Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.”
Main Idea: We experience God’s favor in the welfare of our soul, of our body, and of all the other important aspects of our lives including work, finances, and relationships.
For Hungry Readers: The fundamental expression of God’s favor toward you is that it goes well with your soul. All else is important but secondary. Perhaps you have sung the hymn, “It is well with my soul.” The idea of that hymn is exactly right; if it is well with our soul, we can be at peace in any situation, for we are at peace with God through faith in Jesus Christ.
The apostle John does not stop with the welfare of the soul, however. There is another expression of God’s favor, and that is good physical health. John prays that his readers will have that. The blessing of health and healing is offered in both the Old and New Testaments (Psalm 103:3; Matthew 8:16–17; James 5:14–16). So we should pray for and believe for this favor from God when our soul is in proper health.
Finally, the apostle John does not stop with the welfare of soul and body, but also prays that everything else will go well for his readers, that they may prosper (have more than they need) and succeed. That includes welfare in relationships, work, finances, and possessions. This is an expression of God’s favor that we can pray for and expect, as a general principle, if our soul is in good health, for God cares about these things, as the Book of Proverbs especially and other Scriptures (Psalm 103:1–5; 2 Corinthians 8–9) make clear.
If we do not experience favor in one or more of these areas, does that mean we are at fault? No, there are many reasons why that may occur apart from some fault on our part. The constraints of this article don’t allow me to explore that now, but again, we cannot conclude about ourselves or others that we are at fault if things are not well in some area.
Faith Declarations: God will show me favor in every aspect of my life. I have health in my soul, my body, my relationships, my work, and my finances.
