Day 18 — 40 Days of God’s Favor

Day 18 — Wednesday, March 22nd

Title: What Every Person Wants

Scripture: Psalm 23:6

ESV translation: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life”

NAU translation: “Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life”

NIV translation: “Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life”

NLT translation: “Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life”

Main Idea: The favor that God will give you for the rest of your life and for all eternity could not be any better or greater than it is.

For Hungry Readers: This is one of the strongest declarations of God’s favor in the Bible. Notice among the four translations that the word goodness is consistent. The idea is clear and simple. In his favor toward you your God will always do you good, every day of your life and through all eternity, without wavering, without fail. Good, not bad. No one and nothing can bring you the goodness that God can. And he wants to do you good; you are not twisting his arm or persuading him to do what he would rather not. He has chosen to have favor toward you for Christ’s sake.

Notice that the four translations vary in the word chosen to translate the Hebrew word chesed: mercy, lovingkindness, love, unfailing love. All these terms are correct. All apply because the word chesed is rich and thick with the ideas of the enduring love and kindness that someone shows to another on whom they have favor. Chesed is what David and Saul’s son Jonathon committed to one another. Chesed is what God showed to Jacob despite his faults (Gen. 32:10). Chesed is what God showed to Joseph during his trials in Egypt (Gen. 39:21) and to Ruth and Naomi in their trials (Ruth 2:20). It is the word that describes the love a person gives when they enter a covenant. Chesed is what God has for you in Christ.

Notice finally that the NLT says “pursue” instead of “follow.” Both are correct translations. God’s goodness and unfailing love are pursuing you actively, persistently, inescapably.

The greatest being in the universe has the greatest favor toward you that can be imagined. It is all through Christ. It is worth taking up your cross and surrendering every worldly desire for.

Faith Declarations: Surely God’s goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life.
