Day 16 — Monday, March 20th
Title: Creature comforts
Scripture: Psalm 23:5
“You anoint my head with oil.”
Main Idea: We experience God’s favor in the comforts he provides.
For Hungry Readers: The psalmist describes a cultural practice of his times with which we are not familiar today. Hosts sometimes would indicate the favor they felt toward their guests by anointing their foreheads with olive oil. This was an arid region, and skin became dry. Oil on the skin was a comfort as well as a cosmetic that made the skin shine. A contemporary analogy could be the comfort you receive at restaurants that actually provide a warm, moist towel on a plate after a meal with which to wipe face and hands.
God anoints your head with oil. He comforts you. He gives you more than you need. He is a thoughtful and kind host, full of favor and blessings.
On a practical level, this means you should recognize everything you enjoy beyond your basic needs of food, clothing, and shelter as God’s extra kindness. He is comforting you. Moreover, on a spiritual level, this means spiritual anointing. God gives you his Holy Spirit to comfort you.
Faith Declarations: God anoints my head with oil. He provides comforts and shows me favor in ways large and small, natural and spiritual. God is good.
