Day 15 — Sunday, March 19th
Title: God’s Gracious Hospitality
Scripture: Psalm 23:5
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.”
Main Idea: God acts toward us like a gracious host who brings guests into his home and by his generosity, food, and drink causes guests to know his bountiful favor.
For Hungry Readers: Psalm 23, which begins, “The Lord is my Shepherd,” is based on two metaphors, not just the analogy of God being our Shepherd. The second half of the psalm compares God to a gracious host who treats his guests with bountiful favor, making them feel blessed, full, and comfortable.
It begins with the assurance of knowing that in his favor God feeds us. He prepares a table for us. He allows us to sit down and rest with him at the table and enjoy a table full of food, not just a sandwich eaten on the run. At its most basic level, God’s favor always implies the provision of our daily needs, both physical and spiritual.
The blessing of God’s provision comes even when there are enemies coming against us, not just when times are easy. It comes especially then. God will not fail you in the hour of greatest need.
What does this mean on a practical level? That in every circumstance God is working for good if we can receive it by faith with thanksgiving. There is spiritual good and nutrition in every situation. It also means that in all you do to seek the Lord in prayer, Scripture reading, and involvement with God’s church, there is spiritual food that will feed your soul.
The table is prepared. It is ready and waiting. God is the gracious host. Enjoy!
Faith Declarations: Today I will eat a full meal from the table God has prepared for me. And I will not eat alone. God will be at the table with me.
